Update.
Maumelle Watershed in Pulaski County. Public meeting April 27, 2011 at 1:30-3:30pm and 7-9pm. Our calendar has more information and a link to a website to review the Draft Land Use Plan. Everyone is encouraged to review the plan and give feedback.
Update.
Following December 6 public meetings on the most recent draft long range plan for the Pulaski County portion of the Watershed, a public comment period through Jan. 31 followed. Our president, Nell Mathews, submitted LWVoters Pc's comment.
We asked that the draft plan be made more specific by:
Detailed list of prohibited uses in the Watershed.
Specific definition of terms such as "undisturbed vegetation".
Hardcore committment to a 30% undisturbed vegetation requirement for Watershed
development.
Require that if best management practices are used in the watershed they meet national
standards or they are tested in a model project outside the watershed.
A revised draft plan incorporating some of the suggestions from public comment and meetings will be presented to the public by the County in March. We'll keep you aware of further activity onf Watershed issues.
The newly sworn in fifteen member Quorum Court has five new members. LWVoterPC representatives are meeting with each new member to brief them on Watershed protection issues. Kathleen Oleson, Nell Mathews, Kate Althoff and Ruth Bell have met with Paul Elliott and Joseph Sorvillo, who were pleased to learn more about Watershed issues. Appointments with Judy Green, Teresa Coney, and Shane Stacks are planned.
The Quorum Court will be asked to approve the final form of the County's Watershed long range plan in late spring.
We receive Action Alerts from LWVotersUS regarding bills before Congress. Please call the local office of our Senators and Representative when asked. National League anticipates many action opportunities on environmental and health care legislation.
Thank you, Ruth Bell

Article:Balancing interests in Lake Maumelle
"The Pulaski County Planning and Development department released a recommended land use plan".
Lake Maumelle is a source of drinking water for the State.
"Coal ash is radioactive, filled with heavy metals, and toxic to everything it comes into contact with. Often, coal companies sell it to help make the bulk in concrete, where it supposedly forms bonds with the calcium compounds and does not leach out fast, but still: most concrete since a certain date in the late l970s has lots of coal ash in it. As you know, the coal ash storage rules for many states like ours are not very stringent, and so the storage ponds are liable to break and spill out and poison miles of rivers and streams and land when they break, as happened to the Tennessee River a couple of years ago." "Let's show them what we care about." "ADEQ needs to hear from as many of us as possible at this hearing, December 16, Thurs., 6 PM." __ Dina Nash

The latest update is that the "Water district suspends effort to build Pine Mountain Dam."
"Due to the success of the Arkansas ENERGY STARŪ Appliance Rebate Program, the Arkansas Energy Office has added funds to meet consumer demand. Rebates for eligible appliances will continue to be paid on a first-come, first-served basis and are not guaranteed. Rebates will continue until funds are exhausted."
